Steven Shaviro’s Post-Cinematic Affect is about what it feels like to live in the affluent West in the early 21st century, specifically, it explores the stru Deleuze will insist, following Spinoza, that 'affection of essence' encompass each and every modality of affect, and, hence as Deleuze states in his lectures on Spinoza and affect: 'every affect affects essence … inadequate ideas belong to essence no less than adequate ideas' (1981: np): whether it is the passionate instantaneousness of affection as inadequate ideas, the durations of active corpus id: 56415807. gilles deleuze, lecture transcripts on spinoza’s concept of affect @inproceedings{emilie2004gillesdl, title={gilles deleuze, lecture transcripts on spinoza’s concept of affect}, author={© emilie}, year={2004} } The Deleuze Seminars is a collection of audio recordings, transcriptions, and English translations of, and supplemental materials from, the lectures French philosopher Gilles Deleuze gave during his career at the University of Paris 8. “Spinoza: The Velocities of Thought” was a 14-lecture seminar given from December 1980 to March 1981. In contrast, Spinoza restricts the term ‘passion’ to affects that are passive: “an affect that is called a Passion [pathema] of the Mind is a confused idea by which the Mind affirms of its Body, or some part of it, a greater or lesser power of existing [existendi vis] than before, which, when it is given determines the Mind to think of this rather than that” (III Gen. According to Spinoza: “By affects I understand affections of the body by which the body’s power of acting is increased or diminished, aided or restrained, and at the same time, the ideas of these affections.”7 Rather than claiming affect is purely a power to act, Spinoza 2015-02-23 Deleuze, Gilles. Spinoza argues that the body's manifold encounters transform the body's affects and capacities, or its specific 'power of acting' (cited in. Deleuze, 1992: 225).

These include sensation, bodies, affects and affective atmospheres, together with complex composites of intensities in Deleuze’s logic of sense and the conceptualisation of planes of organisation and composition. This chapter, further, explores and establishes the philosophical background of the book’s pervasive theoretical methodology of intensive problem space and the workings of intensive problematics. Deleuze connects affect to auto-affection in Spinoza's third form of knowledge in the Ethics, where we find a non-subjective auto-affection. Rather than subjective, it's ontological: the auto-affection of essence, the internal agreement in adequate ideas of our essence, the essence of other things, and God / Nature's essence (44; Malabou here cites both Spinoza and Deleuze's online lectures on Spinoza; the point is also made at Deleuze 1988, 51). Spinoza’s Ethics, for Deleuze, constitutes a rejection of the transcendent Good/Evil distinction in favour of a merely functional opposition between good and bad. Good and Evil, for Spinoza as for Lucretius and Nietzsche, are the illusions of a moralistic world-view that does nothing but reduce our power to act and encourages the experience of the sad passions (SPP 25; LS 275-8).

Over the course of that essay Massumi develops this vocabulary, combining the work of thinkers inside the 'second' tradition of affect (especially Bergson, Deleuze, and Spinoza) to argue that affect is "a suspension of affect-reaction circuits and linear temporality in a sink of what might be called passion" (Massumi, 29).
